The development of this product began in the summer of 2010, when Tzu Chi volunteers were mobilised to provide relief for survivors after a flood of unprecedented proportions struck Pakistan. Venerable Master Cheng Yen, Founder of Tzu Chi Foundation Taiwan saw the disaster conditions from the footage the volunteers brought back, including that of a two-week old baby girl having to sleep on the cold, wet ground because her home had been destroyed. Moved by such unspeakable sufferings, the Venerable Master resolved to provide a solution to allow disaster survivors to sleep elevated from the ground. After three years of research and development, the easy-to-store and portable bed weighing 13.5kg was finally launched. The bed can expand to full capacity in 10 seconds, can take up to 150kg in weight, and can, in a second, become a chair that can sit several people. The product is convenient for use at home and outdoor, and its high portability allows it to swiftly be laid out to become the bedding in shelters and at nursing stations during a disaster, giving victims and the sick access to better resting spaces. In an international disaster, the bed can be delivered in a very short time, concurrently delivering the wisdom and love of Tzu Chi.
